Jeans back on the "rise"...

Thank God, the fashion trend is turning around. The low-rise is on it's way out and jeans are returning back to normal. The NY Post has an article about it.

"Plumber's butt" is officially on the way out, along with tummy roll-over, peek-a-boo panties and jeans that require a bikini wax.

After five years of plummeting waistbands, denim designers are finally raising the bar for fall.

"People are coming in and saying, 'I don't want to be so exposed,'" says Caroline Roberts, owner of the Upper East Side boutique Pookie & Sebastian, which specializes in jeans.

While some guys out there may feel a little glum over this turn of events, I for one welcome it. Don't get me wrong, I can appreciate a cute midriff myself. But the low-rise thing had two serious negatives:

  • One, the age of girls wearing these fashions was getting lower and lower. While I don't have any daughters, I cringe at the idea of having one as a preteen walking around in these trashy little outfits (not that I would ever let her).
  • Second, the fact is that very few girls actually looked good in these things. I mean, how many times have you been in a store or a mall or a movie theater and seen bellies flopping out over the waist or hips bulging out on the sides. The peer pressure to conform put the burden on our eyes to endure these ghastly sights.
I noted a while back that the fashion world was already anticipating this movement toward more modest styles. It's indicative of an overall trend that shows young girls are becoming more aware of how cheap and tawdry they were looking and have learned to respect their bodies - and themselves - more.

I know there are some folks - even parents - who see the waning style and wonder what the big deal is. But listen to this creepy 23-year old jeans salesman who laments the new trend:

"I love to see girls in low pants," he says. "It turns guys on. It's like free soft-core porn ... .I like them low in the front, low in the back, but I'm really not into all kinds of crack. But hey, if it comes out, it's all good."
Dads - this could be your daughter he's looking at.
