"No Reporters. No Politics. No Censors."

Last night, 1st Lt. Mike Scotti was on the Glenn Beck program to discuss the documentary he made called Severe Clear. What I like about Lt. Scotti's description of the movie is that there is no political side to take in this, and anyone and everyone with loved ones serving in Iraq or Afghanistan should watch this.

"As part of the first wave in the War on Terror, First Lieutenant Mike Scotti (awarded the Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal with Combat "V") served on the front lines during the 21 day advance to Baghdad. His experiences in Afghanistan as well as Iraq put him face to face with the sobering realities of war on a daily basis. Severe Clear offers an personal unflinching look at life on the battlefield through the eyes of someone who was there."

The UN: Useless As Ever

The UN-brokered cease fire between Israel and Hezbollah was broken by Hezbollah within four hours. Why Israel even listens to the UN is a mystery, considering its blatant anti-Israeli stance. The Israeli majority is feeling betrayed by its government's willingness to agree to the cease fire, and calls are going out for Prime Minister Olmert's resignation.

Olmert's bad judgment (and the fallacy of a cease fire being effective) aside, the UN has proven its weakness once again. Trying to make peace with a terrorist organization? The only reason for Hezbollah's being is to wipe out Israel. It has no interest in peace. But then, the UN doesn't exactly have its priorities in the right place. This is an agency whose main responsibility seems to be to provide high profile, high paying jobs for people who would never make it in real-world employment. Let's look at the UN's successes, shall we?

Anyone?

We do have, however, the Oil-for-Food scandal, the kiddie sex scandal in the Congo, Libya being chosen to chair the Human Rights Commission, and the spectacular failure to forestall genocide in Rwanda -- just to name a few.

When corruption scandals break in the corporate world (i.e. Enron and MCI Worldcom), mighty heads roll. The public demands justice. When corruption scandals break in the UN, a collective yawn is heard throughout the world, and business as usual commences. The public couldn't care less.

Why we are allowing this corrupt, broken-down institution have anything to do with world affairs is beyond me. Putting the UN in charge of peace in the Middle East is akin to putting the hens in charge of the foxes. It simply doesn't work.

The UN began as a noble idea and ended up being an albatross around our necks that we can no longer afford to hang on to. The only ones who benefit from the UN's existence are teapot dictators like Fidel "Is He Still Alive" Castro and frauds like Kofi Annan.

Jeff Jacoby put it succinctly:

The UN is a corrupt institution, one that long ago squandered whatever moral legitimacy it had. The UN's founding documents venerate justice and human rights, but for the past 40 years, the organization has been dominated by a bloc of states -- essentially the Afro-Asian Third World -- most of whose governments routinely pervert justice and violate human rights.

Inside the United Nations, there is no difference between a dictatorship or a democracy: Each gets exactly one vote in the General Assembly. The reason the UN indulges vicious regimes like those in North Korea, Syria, and Cuba is that they are members in good standing, and most other governments lack the courage to cross them. The UN cannot be fixed unless that changes -- and that isn't going to change.

The UN has to go -- the sooner the better.

"Beer Nut"

From World magazine, August 19, 2006 edition, page 7:

"Perhaps one Pennsylvania judge only drinks imported beer. Berks County Judge Jeffrey K. Sprecher threw out a Pennsylvania man accused of buying beer for minors, saying the prosecution failed to prove Miller Genuine Draft is actually beer. A superior court quickly overturned the judge's decision."

Fox News Journalists Kidnapped

WDJT Breaking News.jpg

Breitbart reports on journalists kidnapped in Gaza

Palestinian gunmen ambushed a car carrying a Fox News crew in Gaza City on Monday and kidnapped two of the journalists inside, according to witnesses and Fox. "We can confirm that two of our people were taken against their will in Gaza," Fox News said in a statement.

A Fox employee in Gaza, who declined to give his name because he was not authorized to release information about the incident, said the two kidnapped people were reporter Steve Centanni, a U.S. citizen, and a cameraman from New Zealand.

The men, along with a bodyguard, were parked near the headquarters of the Palestinian security services when two trucks filled with gunmen pulled up and boxed them in, according to the employee. The gunmen took the two out of their sports utility vehicle, which was marked "TV," and drove away, he said.

Major militant groups in Gaza denied having any connection to the abduction, and there was no immediate word of any demands made.

Security officials put police across Gaza on alert to find the gunmen and free the journalists, said Interior Ministry spokesman Khaled Abu Hilal.

"This is not acceptable at all," he said.

Several foreigners have been kidnapped in Gaza in recent months with their abductors demanding jobs from the Palestinian Authority or the release of people being held in Palestinian jails. All those kidnapped have been released within hours without harm.

My prayers go out for the safe return of these highly qualified journalists. Michelle Malkin has more information regarding the two journalists. Flopping Aces seems to be experiencing yet another bout of 'techical difficulties'.

Unerringly, the unwashed posters as DU responding reacting to the news of this kidnapping had comments like this:

...do we have to pay to get the Palestinians to keep them?

Would not Hamas be entirely justified in regarding FOX employees as "enemy combatants", using the same pathetic, arbitrary criteria we used to send people to Gitmo?

These DU posters constitute the mainstream ideology of today's Democratic Party. A scary picture, indeed, but one that can be rectified in the 06 and 08 election cycles.

Iconic Images?

Recently the discovery of doctored images shot in South Beirut and the hollywood-esque production of images and video from the hezbollah-occupied village of Qana have sparked a spirited debate in the blogosphere and main stream media over the veracity of the information being released into the MSM.

Kathleen Parker, in her essay at LJWorld.com, reminds us:

Every historic moment has its iconic image. Vietnam had Gen. Nguyen Ngoc Loan executing a Viet Cong on the street; the Oklahoma City bombing had a fireman holding a dying child in his arms; Abu Ghraib had the hooded torture victim standing on a box.

And today, the Israeli-Hezbollah war has Qana — the Lebanese village where Israeli rockets killed civilians, including 16 children (down from the initially reported 27)

Or did they?

Makes one wonder about other images that have been seared into our cultural consciousness. As troubling as is to realize the media has reported as fact blatantly manipulated images, it is not a modern phenomenon. As soon as photography was used to capture moments of cultural significance, the manipulation of said images began.

During the American Civil War, a pioneering individual by the name of Matthew Brady organized corps of traveling photographers to document this conflict. One famous photo taken in the aftermath of Gettysburgh shows a the corpse of a Confederate sharpshooter who had fallen at Devils Den.

098.jpg

The photographer, Alexander Gardner, wrote a narrative to go along with the photo which describes the Confederate soldier's lonely, and painful death as rebel sniper. A gripping photograph, perhaps. A staged tableau? Absolutely. The body of the soldier did not fall there, it appears to have been moved from a slope leading up to Devil's Den. Other photographs in this series reveal a suspiciously similar looking corpse lying close by this 'sharpshooters den'. The rifle pictured next to the body is not a snipers rifle, also this rifle has appeared in several other photographs by Gardner, perhaps like some sort of prop.

Years roll by and the technology of photography improves - even women are getting into the act! During the Depression and Dust Bowl of the 1930's, many families migrated to California in search of work. These migrants often lived in harsh conditions as did a widow, Florence Owen, with six of her children. Dorothea Lange, employed by the Farm Security Administration was charged with photographing the plight of the migrant worker. Note: These were American workers doing the jobs that Sen. McCain claimed Americans won't do.

lange6a.jpg

The above photograph is world renown for its encapsulation of the plight and resilience of the migrant worker. Even this image was manipulated in part. Dorothea Owen is pictured with only three of her seven children who were present when this photograph was taken. The staging of the photo was to show that this poor woman would be able to lead her modest flock out of poverty and into prosperity if given the opportunity.

Vietnam: Who can forget the image of the little boy crying as his village lies in burning ruins behind him? No mention of the fact the photographer stepped on the child's foot to get him to start crying in this picture. Perhaps this was the inspiration for Jill Greenbergs exposition "End Times"?

Flash forward 2003: Front page image printed by the LA Times:

lat3.jpg

This all too perfect image from Basra, Iraq was a compilation of two digital pictures taken by Brian Walski. When asked about the ethics of this, he replied that he really wasn't debating the ethics of when he did this, he just wanted a better picture. How about worrying about the truth of the story instead of creating a picture that meets your preconceived views?

Manipulating an image to influence public opinion is not a modern day phenomenon. The difference today is the with public's ability to challenge the veracity of the information being fed to them through traditional media outlets. The difference is in the truth behind the image is revealed in hours, NOT years.

A Walk To Remember

America Supports You Freedom Walk - 2006

FW-banner20060706a.jpg

On the five year anniversary of the tragic events at the Pentagon, the twin towers in New York City, and Shanksville, Pennsylvania, the America Supports You Freedom Walk begins a new national tradition to reflect on the lives lost on September 11, renew our commitment to freedom and the values of our country and honor our veterans, past and present.

Freedom Walks are being held in cities across the United States, if you don't see your city listed - go ahead and host one in your city!

I've registered for the DC Freedom Walk. The Walk begins at the Washington Monument, proceeds over the Arlington Memorial Bridge and continues toward the Pentagon. The Walk concludes adjacent to the crash site in the Pentagon South Parking Lot. A concert at the Pentagon parking lot will follow after the Walk concludes.

Interested?

Come walk with me on September 10, 2006.

Have Bumpersticker, will Drive

One of the things that I find most scenic during my drives through the "mean streets" of Los Angeles, are all the whacked out bumperstickers on the road. The Kerry/Edwards bumperstickers especially warm the cockles of my heart.

I took this photo back in February of this year. Hullo! Earth to moonbat!

Ah! The chickenhawk argument!

Hmm....must be a message to the Islamo-fascists out there in the wide world. That's right you terror-Nazis: FEAR BUSH!

The driver was going so fast, I couldn't catch up to him to make sure that he had buckled on his tinfoil hat as he sat behind the wheel....moving through life so recklessly.

Of course it is! Which is why we went to war.

This past Tuesday, I finally "came out of the closet" and told a very liberal client of mine that I was....*gasp*...a CONSERVATIVE REPUBLICAN and a strong supporter of President Bush. I love this gal, and to my relief, like a true, sane liberal, she still accepted and loved me for who I am. She had a bumpersticker that said "No blood for oil". I think she now owns a hybrid.

Where do I get one of these energy bars?

That's just plain messy!

These last two are examples of liberal moonbatmobile. I found the first one above parked alongside the road, around the block from where I live. Why would one deface one's personal property like this? Click it to enlarge. Notice the one that says "I'm moving to Canada"? I wish I had a post-it response to tag the vehicle with, "then why are you still here?".

I posted this video before, under my old YouTube account. I won't do that again; but through Livedigital, I bring you back this clip from Malcolm in the Middle. What made it hilarious for me, was the bumpersticker, "War is not the Answer". I can actually see the liberals who are deranged Bush-haters, resorting to violence to get their message of peace across.

Enjoy the weekend video, and drive safe. If you see any Kerry/Edwards bumperstickers out on the road, don't roll your eyes and fret; we won! Just point, honk, and laugh as you drive by.

Qana - The Director's Cut

Keep Filming..Better images can be shot....

Is there no depth of depravity that hezbollah is not willing to traverse? Can anyone doubt the stage handling of this incident at Qana? Will the media start asking pointed questions regarding the veracity of the stories being sold to them from Lebanon? Well, I think we all know the answer to question number 3...

This is absolutely despicable.

BSG FRIDAY

Season 3.0 Promo Picture:

s640x4801.jpg

A few things come to mind when viewing this picture:

The Anders/Dualla faction is NOT present..YES!!!

Lee (Apollo) seems to have lost his beer gut and gained a tan...when you tan in space does anyone know?

Why is Kara (Starbuck) pictured sitting on the Cylon & Friends side?? She should be sitting in Lee's lap...

Is the former Madame President not wearing anything under her suit jacket?

I discovered an additional picture from the upcoming Season 3.0 and found it contained a shocking spoiler:

jsb_small.jpg

I have a nagging suspicion that Reuters might have had a hand in this...What do you think?

Is It October Yet?

The usual political undercurrents lacing the plotlines of BSG look as though they will be turned up a notch in Season 3.0 based on the recent interview given by Ron French, a BSG Line Producer:

KTW: I understand the show is pretty political. What's the most risque episode you've been involved with?

RF: "Well, it's on cable so there's quite a bit of risque stuff (laughs). The subject matter, actually, is very political and it's amazing how much, especially when the Americans attacked Iraq, how much our story line began to follow that, even to the point of suicide bombers. [Ron Moore] did an interesting thing. He reversed the roles. The heros were the insurgents fighting against the Cylon attackers, which were essentially the American side of the Iraq war. And it's interesting because, if anything else, it opened up a lot of eyes as far as I was concerned, of everyone has a point in what they're doing, whether they're the insurgents or whether they're the attackers in the first place. I thought that was really good."

Skye...an Ex-Donkey?

More like a DINO (Democrat In Name Only), than an Ex-Donkey.

When Gary kindly extended an invitation to me to guest blog during his hiatus, I was thankful for his invitation, and honored be included among this exceptional group of bloggers. All of you inspire me as I work to find my voice in the blogosphere.

Greetings from sunny Philadelphia!

Let me take a moment to introduce myself: I'm Skye, blogmistress of MidnightBlue, probably the only conservative leaning Democrat blogging in The City of Brotherly Love. I am frequently asked if I am 'really' a Democrat? The answer is: Yes. I carry my DNC membership card right behind my Vast Right Wing Conspiracy membership card. more...

Allow Myself To IntroduceÂ….Myself

Hello, this is me!

I’m GroovyVic and I’m usually found at my blog, Fiddle Dee Dee. Gary asked if I’d be interested in guest blogging, so I said “What the heck?” It’s because of Gary that I’m here in Munuviana, and he was one of the first blogs I found way back when I started blogging.

Like Gary, I’m also an “ex-donkey,” although from OH, a state beset by its own political hoo-ha. I’m ashamed to say I voted for BillyJeff back in ’92. But to defend myself, this was right after I’d graduated from a “hotbed of liberalism” state university, therefore I was still in that Lib mindset.

DonÂ’t worry, by the 1996 elections I had shifted to the Right and cast my vote for Bob Dole.

What brought about the change? Well, for one, I graduated from college and I had to get a job. Not in my field of study, I might add. (I’m an English teacher; at least that’s what it says on my degree.) But I had to get out there and be an “adult,” and in the course of working several jobs through a temp agency, I got to see a lot of, shall I say, abuses of the system.

I witnessed this in rather gross amounts when I worked for a credit union. Without going into detail, I saw enough to make me embrace self-accountability and small government. That, and I could take pride in earning my own money; when I saw my name on that paycheck, I knew I’d worked hard for what I got (after I paid for the “privilege” of working in a PA city).

To clarify, I was born and raised in PA, but moved to OH two years ago because of my husbandÂ’s job. HeÂ’s in the PA National Guard, and we moved so that he could be closer to work. For security reasons IÂ’m not allowed to say anything more than Husband is a Guardsman. I could tell you more, but then IÂ’d have to, you know, shoot you, and I donÂ’t want to be doing any more of that!

A Little Premature

(First, an introduction: I'm Pam, guestblogging while Gary recharges over the next couple of weeks. Many thanks to Gary for asking me to join the Ex-Donkey brigade.)

Hezbollah is now declaring victory over Israel:

In the latest video aired on Al-Manar TV the terror group says it “defeated the invincible army” and “July-August 2006: Legend shattered.”

The new video clips show thousands of supporters waving Hizbullah and Lebanon flags.

These clips, which are aired between regularly-scheduled programs, include excerpts from Hassan Nasrallah speeches in which he had promised victory; similar videos were aired during the IDFÂ’s withdrawal from Lebanon in May 2000.

It seems that much like the PR machines of Paris Hilton and Lindsay Lohan, the Hezbollah PR machine never stops. (Of course, Paris and Lindsay don't have Reuters and other MSM bigwigs in their pockets.) I wonder how many flag wavers in the videos are there voluntarily?

There is the fact that a cease-fire has not been declared or agreed to by anyone yet. But Hezbollah isn't in the habit of letting little inconveniences like the truth get in the way. And if Israel is smart, it won't listen to the "international community" and will continue to pound upon Hezbollah until it is as ineffectual as a bowl of pudding.

Cease-fires in the past have been nothing but a pause on the march to the inevitiable. Hezbollah wants nothing but a wiping of Israel off the map. Israel needs to stand strong. Shame on those who stand by and wave their fingers at Israel like parents tsk-tsking an errant child.

This Got My Goat!

Ace of Spades HQ brought this to the attention of the blogosphere a few days ago:

;font-family:sans-serif;">Iraq Still Manages to Shock

Listen to this story... by John Hendren

Morning Edition, August 7, 2006 · Sectarian strife continues to worsen in the Iraqi capital of Baghdad.

...the killing in Iraq is getting: shepherds in the rural western Baghdad neighborhood of Gazalea have recently been murdered, according to locals, for failing to diaper their goats....

Yes, you read that right. According to the audio:

The sexual tension is apparently so high in regions where sheiks take a draconian view of Sharia Law, that they feel the sight of naked goats poses an unacceptable temptation. They blame the goats.
Not only that, but at a grocery store in east Baghdad, the grocer and 3 others were shot to death and the grocery store firebombed because the grocer had "suggestively arranged his vegetables".

Have I mentioned how much I love my country, lately? Not that we don't get our own "news of the weird" over here...but, God bless America and our *ahem* liberal attitudes and acceptance of naked goats and erotic vegetables!

Ex-Donkey is Wordsmith!

Well...no, not really.

I thought I should introduce myself, before I start posting my droppings here. I run a very low-key blog called Sparks from the Anvil, started in June of 2005.

I am quite honored to have been invited to guest-blog here. You see, Gary is my "blogfather". A term he coined when I let it be known that stumbling upon his blog sometime in early 2005 is what helped inspire me into the notion of blogging.

Blogs were fairly new to me, and I only began hearing about them in 2004. I considered myself an idiot with opinions that no one would care to read about. Then, when I read Gary's "FAQ about me" on his old blogsnot, and read his posts, I thought, "Hey! That's just like me....I can do this!" Of course, I may consider myself an idiot, but I certainly don't think of Gary as one.

One of the things I love about Gary's posts is that he is rarely longwinded. So I can pop on by, read his new posts in less than a minute, and feel like he just crammed an undigestable full course meal into a concise, luncheable.

The other thing that has always stood out is his humor.

I never quite knew what Gary thought of me. He rarely seems to respond to comments in his comment sections, and I don't believe he's ever commented over at my place; for all I knew, he probably thought I was some silly fanboy, stalking him.

So him contacting me to guest-blog is like George Bush asking me to sit-in at the Oval Office....and take care of his dog, Barney.

Gary, have fun relaxing! And thanks for letting us blog-sit for you. I promise not to break anything or steal any oval office pens.

The Ex-Donkey "Goes Dark"

Eighteen months ago, I started a little site on Blogger that became a daily distraction from the routine and the mundane. Almost one year ago, I moved the blog over to the world of MuNu and the site got a much-needed makeover.

Maintaining this blog has become a labor of love but in order to continue it with the same level of vigor and enthusiasm I need a much-deserved vacation. More than a vacation, I need a break. So I'm taking one. As they say on my favorite show, "24", I am "going dark" - severing all communication for several weeks.

To be clear (to those who like to speculate about such things) I am NOT entering a rehab program, checking myself into a mental health clinic, going under the knife for plastic surgery, being given a new identity through the witness relocation program or any such other odd venture. I'm just taking some time off to recharge my batteries and maybe do a few things that I've been meaning to do for some time.

Fortunately, however, I have five guest bloggers who have graciously agreed to jointly take the conn in my absence (and help keep the site from plummeting to the bowels of the TTLB Ecosystem). Enjoy their stuff.

Everyone have a great August, and I'll see you all again on the other side of Labor Day! Ciao!

Thankfully, The People In Charge Do "Get It"

By now, everybody has heard about the twarted terrorist plot to blow up as many as twenty airliners bound for the U.S.

These are serious times. We need serious people protecting this country's citizens. We need people who grasp what it is that we are fighting. Pam at Blogmeister USA spells it out for Left-wing fruitcakes who still don't get it:

"For those of you who have difficulty in understanding what's going on, let's make it clear: Hardline Muslims want to kill us. They don't care if you voted for Al Gore in 2000 or John Kerry in 2004. They don't care if you live in a blue state instead of a red state. They don't care if you want Joe Lieberman to lose his independent run for the senate in November. They want to kill so many Americans that we will give up fighting in the Middle East. Their ultimate goal is to spread radical Islam to all four corners of the Earth. And if you don't end up converting to Islam, you are to understand that you will be less than a second-class citizen." [emphasis Pam's]
I wonder how many people are sitting in front of the TV or their computers this morning, taking in this news and thinking "Geez, I'd feel a whole lot better if the Democrats were in charge"?

McGovern II: Democrats Misread The Political Landscape

In 2002, Democrats lost the Senate because they were weak on national security. In 2004, Democrats lost more seats and President Bush was re-elected because they were weak on national security. Third time's the charm, right?

The Left-roots that have begun to assert greater control over the party's direction now think they have Republicans right where they want them. They're flexing their muscles this morning as they pursue a path that the GOP should be thanking its lucky stars over. John McIntyre at RealClearPolitics explains:

Anti-war Democrats and much of the mainstream media continue to confuse anti-war with anti-lose. The incessant commentary that 2/3rd of the country is against the war completely misreads the American public, as much of the negativity towards the war isn't because we are fighting, but rather a growing feeling that we are not fighting to win or not fighting smart.

Democrats went down this road in the late 1960's with Vietnam and they are still carrying the baggage from that leftward turn. Lamont's win is a big step back to that losing formula. During the height of the "progressive" revolt against the war in Vietnam, Americans voted 57% for Nixon and Wallace in 1968, followed by a whopping 60% for Nixon in 1972 against the avowededly anti-war McGovern.

These Democratic wipeouts in '68 and '72 occurred while tens of thousands of Americans were dying in Southeast Asia. Today, as much as our media and the left want to make Iraq a Vietnam-like quagmire, casualties are running at a tenth of what they were in Vietnam. The other big difference from Vietnam is 9/11. America was attacked 5 years ago, something many on the left seem to forget, but the voters have not. The comments that Iraq had nothing to do with 9/11 are irrelevant as Americans understand, rightly or wrongly, that we are in Iraq because of what happened on September 11. Only conspiracy-minded leftists believe otherwise. Just ask yourself if the U.S. would have invaded Iraq had 9/11 not happened.

The "Bring Them Home, Bring Them Home" chant may win congressional districts in San Francisco and Seattle as well as Democratic primaries in solidly blue states, but it is not a serious policy. Just what does "Bring Them Home" really mean? Bring them home and Ahmadinejad suddenly gives up his pursuit of nukes, Al-Qaeda and Hezbollah domesticate and forego terror? Leftists, pacifists and Pat Buchanan isolationists may be that naïve, but the majority of Americans are not.

The civilized world is at a very dangerous moment. There is no question that the Bush administration has made a bucket load of mistakes in fighting this war, but they (and thus America) are fighting. Bring them home is the equivalent of "we quit, we give up." Americans aren't quitters and the majority of Connecticut's citizens aren't quitters, as Lieberman's likely win in November will prove.

A couple of months ago, I guesstimated that this fall the Republicans - while maintaining control of Congress - would probably lose a handful of Congressional seats and incur a net loss of as many as three Senate seats. After the events of last evening, I'm starting to revise those estimations.

If the focus of this election hinges on national security, than the House is likely to maintain its status quo and the GOP could be on their way to a bullet-proof majority in the Senate.
