It's the Poppy and Bubba tour...again

Dubya tapped #s 41 and 42 to raise private funds for disaster relief for the Gulf Coast.

Now don't get me wrong, whatever their efforts yield is terrific for those in need. But am I the only one who gets creeped out seeing these two together. Clinton most definitely benefits from this association, and I have no doubt that he plays it up to the hilt. As I said once before in a previous post, it's like Bill is becoming the Tom Hagen of the Bush family. Yech.

The Roberts Court...

Bush chooses Roberts to succeed Rehnquist as Chief Justice!

Wow. More than unexpected, but I like this. A lot. Despite some doubts from the Right, a thorough investigation into Roberts' history has shown him to be almost a clone of William Rehnquist - and even Ann Coulter has been kind of quiet lately about his Conservative chops.

The most interesting thing now is watching how this plays out. No doubt O'Conner will stay on until another Associate Justice in confirmed - because technically her spot will now still be open. But the Bush Administration must move on this fast - two sets of confirmation hearings will give the Left too much to juggle.

Having already done the research, they should already have someone in mind.

William H. Rehnquist (1924-2005)...

rehnquist_1.jpg
The Chief Justice of the Supreme Court died last night at his home in Arlington, VA. While this isn't a complete surprise, it was a little unexpected. Despite suffering from thyroid cancer, the old man seemed determined to tough it out as best he could. Many thought he would retire after this session, fueling speculation that his vacancy would be the first for President Bush to fill. I count myself among those who expected him to hang up the robe.

But when asked by reporters about his possible retirement, he wryly told them, "That's for me to know, and you to find out." Well, it would seem he likely knew he had weeks to live at that point and would probably not see the next session in October. It wouldn't surprise me if he had confided this to the President, who he knew could be trusted with this information - which could have had an influence on Bush's choice of Roberts.

Rehnquist will certainly be listed among the top Chief Justices in the history of the Court. How ironic that just as he passes away, a new Associate Justice is about to be confirmed and sworn in who clerked under him.

Now Bush will have two more nominations to make - a new Chief (from the ranks of the current Associates) and a new Associate. My money is on Scalia for Chief. And I hope whoever his successor is, he keeps the golden stripes on the Chief Justice's sleeves - a tradition that Rehnquist started. But there'll be plenty of time to speculate over that. In fact the Liberal special interest groups may now attempt an eleventh-hour ramping up of their opposition to Roberts during the hearings because of this turn of events.

For now, let us honor the man who served his country so well. R.I.P.

Revenge of the Oompa-Loompa...

oompaloompa.gif
This is just too funny. Apparently for years now, some vertically-challenged actor has been claiming on his resume that he played on Oompa Loompa in the original "Willy Wonka & The Chocolate Factory". The 57-year old Ezzy Dame, however, was "outed" by an actor who really did play an Oompa Loompa named Rusty Goffe.

Dame later confessed to the ruse:

“I never intended to harm anyone or my community by this little white lie. It was a little white lie that became my haunted nightmare.”
I kinda feel badly for the little bugger. How humiliating! Sounds like a "Seinfeld" episode.

Durbin's Dire Warnings On Roberts...

Today in the Chicago Tribune, lovable old Senator Dick Durbin (D-Ill) lays out "what's at stake" in the hearings on John Roberts that begin today. You know Durbin, the guy who compared our soldiers down in Gitmo to Nazis, Stalinists and the Khmer Rouge?

Anyway, he writes that his biggest concern in these hearings is to determine where Roberts stands on the commerce clause of the Constitution, specifically as it relates to things like environmental laws, civil rights laws and the Constitutionally elusive "right to privacy" established in 1965 and acknowledged by "Roe".

I found one sentence in particular, however, to be an interesting choice of words on Durbin's part:

"Does [Roberts] believe that Congress has the power to pass laws that protect the most vulnerable, no matter where they live?"
No matter where they live. Even in the womb, Senator?

Unemployment Drops...Again!

Looky here, if you scroll down far enough on MSNBC.com you can actually find this story: U.S. Payrolls Expand, Jobless Rate Falls.

It seems the unemployment rate is now down to 4.9%, with 169,000 jobs added in August. What, no "the increase in jobs exceeded analysts expectations" commentary? If it fell short of expectations, you can bet your bottom dollar that would be part of the headline.

But wait. The article sets the tone for next month, when the job growth numbers will undoubtably slow because of Katrina. And you just know the MSM will be ALL.OVER.THAT. And guess whose gonna get the blame? Hmm. Let me think...

You can't trust America's TV news, says Clooney...

Interesting headline, huh? Lefty actor/director George Clooney tells the British News/Telegraph that television news in the U.S. should be viewed with a critical eye - something Conservatives have said for...well for as long as there's been television.

What's this? Has Clooney stopped drinking the kool-aid? It can't be!

It isn't. Here's the actual quote:

Now, with the onset of cable television and "130 different channels", the quality of news was "fractured", with each network, like Fox, playing to audiences with "specific belief patterns".
Ah, so it's the evil Fox News Channel you see. Of course I'll bet Clooney had no problem with tv news back in the days when there was only CNN.

I think the worst ones are from Moonbat bloggers whose typing fingers seem to be disconnected from their brains (not to mention their hearts). A-holes.

Cindy Sheehan: Professional Protester

It didn't take long. Now the infamous Mrs. Sheehan is reportedly set to protest the Blue Angel air show in Maine.

"Bruce Gagnon of Maine Veterans for Peace says Cindy Sheehan will be the featured guest at a protest outside the Brunswick Naval Air Station on September tenth."
She's a piece of work, ain't she?

Oh, and she's also saying that she plans to spend every August in Crawford doing the same schtick. Lovely.

Project Valour-IT

Major Dad brought this program sponsored by Soldiers' Angels to my attention. Project Valour-IT (Voice Activated Laptops for OUR Injured Troops) provides voice-controlled software and laptop computers to wounded Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen and Marines recovering from hand and arm injuries or amputations.

I have permalinked it under a section of links called SUPPORT THE TROOPS! in the sidebar. You can also check it out here.

Fox News Numbers Growing Stronger...

In the month of August, Fox News Channel scored its highest ratings to date according to Nielsen Media Research. Fox beat the competition again in prime time - with 11 of the 12 top shows in cable news and continues to pull viewership away from CNN and MSNBC in the industries most coveted audience.

"In the news demographic of adults 25-54, Fox News ruled again, with 541,000 viewers, up 12%, while CNN lost 9% to 236,000 and MSNBC was mostly flat at 145,000. Headline News averaged 160,000, up 111.%"
Those of us who watch it know why. Because on FNC you'll get the whole story and hear from both sides of the issues.

Of course, the Franken crowd will undoubtably point to this as further evidence that the "evil liars" at Fox are fooling even more of the unwashed masses with their GOP propaganda. The screeds should be coming shortly.

Don't forget to update your links and bookmarks. Tomorrow we'll start business as usual. But right now, since I've finally got the kids in bed, I need to go and set up my new flat screen TV.

Hey, a guy's gotta have priorities.

Goodbye Blogger...

It's been almost exactly seven months ago to the day that I decided to just go ahead and start a blog of my own. Unfortunately, I had no idea how. Enter Blogger. Yep, easy as one, two, three...and I was publishing.

Over time, I got comfortable and really had no reason to make a change. Sure the server went down from time to time and I had lost a post or two before I could save it, but I got over it. I was even used to the fact that having the word 'blogspot' in your URL can be perceived by many as a kind of cyberspace training wheels. Don't get me wrong, there are many excellent blogs hosted by blogspot, but they tend to be the exception rather than the rule. Just keep clicking on "next blog" in the upper right corner and you're just as likely to hit a "clog" (advertisement page) as you would a decent site.

Recently, I was contacted by Steve the Llama Butcher. He called me down to his private office to "make an offer I can't refuse". I entered the dimly lit room and Steve motioned for me to take a seat. After I kissed his ring out of respect, I sat down. Steve leaned back in his leather chair, put both feet up on his mahogany desk and asked if I would like to make a move. He was inviting me to join the "family" of Mu.Nu. Of course the "Commission" needed to formally approve his nomination of me, but he assured me that it was not much more than a formality because they were familiar with his standards and his endorsement carried much weight.

I was intrigued. I really had little knowledge of this strange place known as Munuviana. Explaining to Steve that I was the cheapest sumbitch East of the Hudson River, I inquired what it would cost me. Steve simply chuckled as he scratched behind the ears of the cat seated on his lap. "Nothing", he said, "It's absolutely free." I was more intrigued.

Then I asked him how difficult it would be as opposed to the very user-friendly Blogger. I embarrassingly admitted that I'm as comfortable using HTML as a one-legged man is jumping on a trampoline. He described the ease and greater versatility of the Movable Type publishing format and before long I was hooked. Then he muttered something unintelligible like one day I may be called upon to perform a service for him but that such a day might never come...yadda, yadda, yadda. I couldn't concentrate. I was too excited.

So there you have it. I have just finished loading up the moving van and effective tomorrow, the new Ex-Donkey Blog will officially launch. I expect to leave this old site up indefinitely (at least a stripped down version of it, anyway). Until then, this is "goodbye" to Blogger. It's been real.
