The New Fall TV Season: What I'll Be Watching...And Why

First off let me point out that having the opportunity to watch any television between changing poopie diapers, reading stories, helping with homework, performing various domestic chores and maintaining two blogs is a miracle unto itself. So if there is a particular show that I watch it's only because I really, really like it or my wife does and I love her enough to endure it so we can share the alone time together.

So there aren't that many to list. And please don't bother making suggestions for anything that doesn't appear below because though I have no doubt it's good, I just don't have the time. Thanks anyway.

Also keep in mind that any specific night and time of broadcast is irrelevant as I'm most likely going to tape it and watch it another time. Sunday:

9pm: Family Guy (FOX)
This is show is so laugh out loud funny I can't not watch it. It returned to Fox after being cancelled a couple of years ago. I never watched it first run but a buddy of mine had the DVDs and let me borrow them. When they announced it was returning this summer, I couldn't resist.

10pm: Grey's Anatomy (ABC)
This is the wife's show. Personally I could take it or leave it since a hospital show is nothing new. However, the series is interesting in that it focuses on the fallability of doctors and presents them in a very human light.

Monday:

8:30pm: How I Met Your Mother (CBS)
A new comedy this season, I'm giving it a chance because the critics rave about it. Plus it features Alyson Hannigan (from "Buffy" and the "American Pie" movies) and Neil Patrick Harris (Dougie Howser). Frankly, I hadn't seen Harris for years until he did a cameo in "Harold and Kumar Go To White Castle" and he was pretty funny in that. The premise is that the whole show is flashback (a la "Wonder Years") from the future about how a particular married couple ended up meeting and dating. Sounds interesting so I'll give it a chance. Plus it'll make a nice 20-25 minute filler show on tape when I have that much time to spare.

Tuesday:

8pm: Gilmore Girls (WB)
No, I don't watch this crap. It's a total chick show but my wife loves it. She can watch it on her own. I only list it here because I'm the one responsible for taping it. And if I ever forget, boy is there hell to pay.

10pm: Boston Legal (ABC)
I've watched this show going back to the days when it was "The Practice". Back then, it was a compelling, intelligent show about criminal law. It's creator, David Kelley is an ex-lawyer and a big Hollywood Liberal, who unfortunately seems to use every episode in some way to take potshots at President Bush, his Justice Department, his Adminstration in general, the Patriot Act or Iraq. It's starting to get on my nerves. And the only reasons I still watch it are 1) my wife loves the show and 2) the outstanding performances by James Spader and William Shatner. They make the show worth watching. (UPDATE: And BTW, they both just won Emmy Awards) But I'm keeping it on a short leash this season and if the gratuitous Bush-bashing becomes to much to tolerate than the wife will be watching this one alone too - after Gilmore Girls.

Wednesday:

9pm: Lost (ABC)
Possibly the best show on TV right now. If you haven't seen it yet, you've missed a lot. But you can catch a summary episode this week at 8pm that should fill you in with all the "factual" stuff you need to know to understand it. I didn't start watching this until halfway through last season and I got caught up with it during the winter reruns. It was worth it. You can always go to Blockbuster to rent the old episodes or if you have a friend who is a die hard fan and bought season one on DVD, borrow it.

Thursday:

9pm: CSI (CBS)
The original, and still the best. Marg Helgenberger alone makes this worth watching. Smokin'!!! Seriously though, it's well written and thought provoking and it never seems to get stale, even after five seasons. I can afford to miss this one every once in a while but I try to watch as often as I can.

10pm: ER (NBC)
I'm really starting to get tired of this one, but I feel like I have so much invested in it (I've been watching it since it started about 10 years ago). It's like a long time girlfriend that you feel like dumping, but don't quite have the heart to. And every once in a while she does that little thing that you like when you're...um, nevermind.

Friday

10pm: Battlestar Galactica (Sci-Fi)
Rivals "Lost" for me as the best show on TV. Forget about the original. It has the same character names (though many are very different than the original cast), same setting and same general premise. But this show is totally different. It's gritty, intense, character-driven and knocks you on your ass every week. Unfortunately, this week's show is the last one until January, when the second half of the season ramps up. But for the year, it is my Friday must see (or must tape and see).

Well, there you have it. Eight reasons why I don't get enough sleep. I really don't need a ninth...or a tenth...

I'm probably watching too much TV as it is.

1 I'm hooked on Battlestar as well. It seemed like a short season, and didn't realize that only half of it is done. I can't believe new episodes won't begin until next year. That's painful.

2 I used to be a big ER fan, so I know what you mean about it. I finally got fed up when I couldn't keep track of who was who...and there was a bit of Bush bashing...plus I can't stay up that late anymore and I forgot to tape it half the time. So, we've parted company. I know you don't want suggestions, but my new favorite is "Dirty Jobs" on the Discovery channel.

3 Re: Boston Legal. Love it. The writing is brilliant, Spader is brilliant, and who knew Shatner could be so amazing in a role. And at least the show has a conservative Republican character. And you MISS shows? Dude, get TiVO!
