The Confirm Alito Coalition

Well, there are a lot of choices that would have been just as good, but very few that would have been better. Samuel Alito is an excellent pick that will so unite Republicans that it'll be like like the last four weeks never happened.

Frankly, I'm tickled over it.

Trick Or Treat?

Hah! Major treat for Conservatives! The word is that the President Bush is naming Samuel Alito to the Supreme Court! Formal announcement to come at 8:00am.

Erick at RedState.org called it yesterday (actually he's been talking about it since Friday). What's even better, he points out that there are 19 Democrat Senators currently still in office that voted in favor of Alito for his elevation to the Circuit Court in 1990. Can't wait to hear the squirming from the likes of Senators Kennedy, Biden and Leahy who thought he was just fine fifteen years ago. Heh.

The verdict from Democrats and Liberal interest groups will definitely be: Scary!!

Giants v. Redskins

UPDATE: GIANTS WIN!!!! Racking up 36 points against a tough Foreskins defense. And Washington? All they got was a rock. Happy Halloween, guys!

This week, an emotional match-up:

The Giants buried their late owner, Wellington Mara earlier this week. The players genuinely loved the old man. And John Mara's eulogy for his father made even the toughest and stoic men in the congregation weep like five year old girls. Unlike certain megalomaniacal owners in the league - ahem, Jerry Jones - Mara was humble, yet inspirational. He loved the game of football almost as much as his family and his church. And he had the kind of passion for his team that I don't think exists in the NFL ownership anymore.

The Redskins are playing well; indeed much better than anyone ever expected. But not only are they due for a let-down, their opponent this week is playing for more than a better division rank. They're playing for Well Mara.

Dismiss this all as sentimental hogwash if you want, but in today's league with so much parity between opponents this kind of intensity almost always makes a difference.

No go on out boys, and win one for the Duke!

Is That All There Is?

John Podhoretz is his column today about the Fitzgerald investigation:

That's all, folks. The grand jury in the most hotly watched Washington political-legal investigation since Whitewater concluded its business yesterday by returning charges against one man and one man alone — who, the grand jury alleges, didn't tell the truth about when and how he discovered a piece of classified information.

Scooter Libby was not charged with the misuse of that information, or with the unlawful exposure of an undercover agent, or with involvement in a conspiracy to reveal her identity. He is, it is worth repeating, charged only with lying about his knowledge of it.

But that didn't stop the folks at MoonBat.org from trying to make chicken salad out of chicken... Well, you know. They fired out an email literally within minutes of the conclusion of Fitzgerald's press conference:

"This is one of the biggest scandals to rock the White House in America's 229-year history."

Really? Well, that's their story and they're sticking to it. And they want their members to write letters with their talking-points: "Our tool makes it easy to write to your local paper". Their tool of course is a form that allows you to fill in your name and address and cut and paste "talking points" about the grand "Bush Lied" conspiracy theory of Iraq into the body. Then it emails your "letter" to the publication of your choice. I fully expect to see one next week in my local paper (just one of course, as the editors are smart enough not to publish "repeat" material).

It didn't matter what the result of this investigation was, the Moonbat's knee-jerk response was always going to be the same: "The American people must know this important truth: Today's indictment is about a cover-up of the lies that led our nation to war in Iraq." Yadda, yadda, yadda. Whatever guys.

A Let-Down For Libs

There aren't too many details at this time. But it looks like one idictment for Scooter Libby, with five counts: obstuction of justice, perjury (2), making false statements (2). None of the indictments relate to an "outing" of a CIA operative. It appears neither Libby nor anyone else in the administration was deemed to have "outed" Valerie Plame. Did anyone, technically speaking? Who knows? We certainly don't know who Robert Novak's source it yet.

The indictments have to do with the investigation. And while we don't have Libby's side of the story, Fitzpatrick deemed that the answers he gave had the appearance of being intentionally misleading. Libby has officially resigned and no doubt will have his day in court.

Legally, I can't really comment on the indictments as I don't speak legalese. I need to look at the analysis of others. There are still a lot of unanswered questions here.

Politically, while this isn't a great outcome for the administration it's basically a big goose-egg for the Democrats and others on the left when compared to the hopes and dreams they had of perp walks, handcuffs, jackets over the head...and oh yes Karl Rove.

The fact is, if you were to ask your co-workers who Scooter Libby is, very few would know. In fact, I guaranty at least one of them would answer: the orange muppet with the google-eyed glasses. Hell, most people don't even know who Karl Rove is but they may have at least heard the name before.

Anyway, we need to wait and see how this plays out to accurately gage the fallout but if I was a Rove-hating Liberal today, I'd be pretty disappointed.

UPDATE: 2:55pm
Listened to the press conference. Here's my take-away:
1) Neither Libby nor Rove nor anyone else knowingly or intentionally "outed" Valerie Plame.
2) Someone's statements or actions did lead to Plame being "outed". Exactly who that person is has not been revealed and that person is not being charged with any crime
3) Prior to Libby's testimony, there was no crime committed. Libby committed a "crime" by saying he first learned of Plame's investigation on a certain date and they have testimony that he in fact knew and said so prior to that. It's this false testimony that "obstructed" the investigation and that is a crime under the rules of a grand jury investigation.

So the ideas that 1) the revelation of Plame's identity was something the White House did to "get back" at Joe Wilson and 2) that this can be extrapolated to a scenario that the whole WMD charge was fabricated by the White House as a justification to got to war in Iraq are completely out the window.

More analysis as this percolates.

UPDATE II: 3:55pm
One thing that I can't quite figure out. By "outing" a CIA operative, you're not saying they worked for the CIA, you're revealing that they were operating "covertly" for the CIA. Near as I can tell, Libby (or any one else, including the reporters) never said or is reported to have said that Plame was a "covert" agent. When asked by a reporter at the presser, Fitzgerald would not say whether or not Plame was, in fact, classified as a "covert" agent.

So was she really, then? I'll have to do some searching around about that.

What's Happening Besides Indictment Speculation

Basically, everyone's waiting to here what information Fitzgerald will release today and working themselves into a frenzy trying to guess.

In the meantime, here are some other interesting things happening on the web:

- Hugh Hewitt, who wrote a book about the growing influence of the Blogosphere in the world of media (and a pretty darn good one at that), writes an op-ed in - of all places - the NYT chiding his fellow Conservatives about the Miers nomination and withdrawal.

- The WaPo chronicles the disaster that was said nomination, revealing that it pretty much didn't have a prayer from the get-go.

- RealClearPolitics looks at the short list for a new nominee.

- Speculation is already buzzing that the pick will be Sam Alito or Michael Luttig.

- Speaking of picks, Jay Novacek picks the Giants over the Redskins this weekend. Will they win one for Well?

- Looks like Sulu is gay.

- And lastly, a women who hung herself was mistaken by neighbors as a Halloween decoration. You can't make this stuff up.

That ought to tide you over until the press conference.

Xbox Brat

This video may or not be real, but if it is I can tell you this is exactly why my nine-year old doesn't have Xbox (or Playstation or Gamecube or any of those other mind-numbing, addictive video game consoles).

Supposedly, this nine-year old kid is arguing with his mother while he plays a game and his headset records him. First she asks him to turn it down, and he gives her all kinds of crap and refuses. About two and a half minutes into it, he's demanding that she bring him his "M*****F****** chocolate milk".

Again, I would hope this is a hoax, but I'm not naive enough to think this doesn't happen all too often nowadays. Sad. This kid is clearly crying out for help a beating. Of course, his parents created this little monster so they get what they deserve.

Miers Withdraws

Whew. Less than twenty-four hours after my post officially opposing this nomination, Harriet Miers apparently was convinced enough by my persuasive arguments to withdraw her nomination. Seriously, though. It doesn't come a moment too soon.

Michelle Malkin's feelings echo mine (and probably most of the blogosphere):

What a relief. Sad, pensive, what-a-waste relief. Not happy-joy-joy relief.

There will be those on the Right who will be more than relieved. They'll be gloating. Cut that shit out right now! It's time to unite again for a new nominee.

I'm sure the President is angry right now. I hope he takes some time to cool off. This is no time to be playing games by throwing in Alberto Gonzales' name. He needs to pick a tried and true Conservative, originalist, strict constructionist nominee who will make mincemeat out of their opposition. Man, woman, white, black, hispanic...whatever. If the pick is any one that was on the wishboards prior to him picking Miers, Republicans will come together and fight hard. They need to, because so will the Democrats.

I predict that this time next month, Liberals will be kicking themselves that they didn't get Miers.

Saint Cindy Arrested...Again

I love this woman. I know a lot of people are sick to death of her, and it's unfortunate that her antics are no doubt a source of pain for the families of the fallen. But, can she be any more of a joke at this point?

Political Pit Bull has some first hand observations about her latest publicity stunt - with photos. Too bad she didn't actually tie herself to the White House gates. That would have been a nice touch. Even the media aren't "championing" her anymore. They cover her like the oddity she has become - like a nine-car pileup on I-95 or an overturned tractor trailer.

And I'm sure I'll get lots of happy emails and comments from the deranged Left who are still trying to convince themselves that she's still just a "grieving mom". Let them keep their delusions, because it's their enthusiastic support that continues to egg her on. I can't wait for her latest entry on the land whale's website.

In fact, I think it's time she takes it to the next level. Maybe she can stand in front of the White House and hold her breath until she turns blue. Imagine the A/P photos!
